It's been cold. Seriously. After lots of not-cold. Cold. The tulips I brought home last week have been a blessing and long-lasting. Their brilliant, even shocking, red brings back a sense of warmth, one we've had a lot of this winter but not these past few days.
Yet the strength of these flowers, at least in the images that I captured, becomes more apparent when the color is drained out. It's quite an experience, desaturating an image: I watch the shift in my feelings as the intensity of the color changes. It's a process unique to digital processing. Powerful, almost moving...
This image is more believeable to me without color. The red of the bloom is so intense that it is astonishingly difficult to render it. And when I get it right, you'd probably think I'd over-saturated it anyway. The range of black and white feels more appropriate to this one. Perhaps that's just some non-flower-like modesty on my part. Still, it suits.
